Introducing RubyRoles

RubyRoles finds Ruby career opportunities for you, instead of having to hunt for them. You sign in with GitHub, answer five questions, and get your three best matches right away. After that, receive up to one new role per business day, only when something clears the bar your answers set. And it’s free!

It lives at RubyRole.com (can get there from RubyRoles.com as well). I built it because the Ruby job market is bigger than it looks, but still suffers from the dark patterns, recruiter spam, and resume traps that have broken the tech hiring market.

How It Works

Every night RubyRoles searches the web for new positions. Each new job posting is read once by a judge model that pulls out the work style, the seniority, how central Ruby is, the salary when one is posted, and where the job can be based.

Your five answers set the filters. Your Ruby focus, your level, remote or hybrid or on site, where you can be based, and a salary floor if you have one. Everything that passes gets a score from recency, distance, and exactness. The matches go to the judge, which reads each one against your answers and returns the results. How well it fits, on a five step scale, and how likely you would be to apply.

The three best go on your matches page and into a welcome email. From then on the daily pick is the best unseen match that clears the bar. Two fixes went in after yesterday's launch. The same position listed for ten locations now counts once, and one company can no longer take all three of your first slots.

Feedback improves matches. There is a button for it on every page, and it helps improve the service for everyone using RubyRoles.

The Stack

RubyRoles is a Rails application based on Jumpstart Pro. The interface is Poetry, an AI-native frontend framework for Rails I maintain, restyled in an instant from a design.md file. The judging runs on RubyLLM 2.1’s new judgments API against Jev, a model from TypeSafe that only answers typed questions, so every judgment comes back as a choice, a score or a probability rather than a paragraph to parse. Initial candidate and job scoring runs in about a second and costs a fraction of a cent.

Over 12,000 organizations are currently tracked, and the site gathers data from 121 applicant tracking systems, as well as companies’ custom career pages. I expect the position numbers to increase slightly as the system scans the web for new organizations and fills out the long tail of companies using Ruby.
